BOSTON — Steve Pemberton, former 2020 U.S. Senate candidate and the renowned author of “A Chance in the World,” announced today his endorsement of Ed Markey for U.S. Senate. His announcement comes as mail-in and early voting begins in the primary election, and the Markey campaign is building swift and strong momentum.

“Though Senator Markey and I are of different generations, races, and faiths, we share a common bond in the working-class experiences from which we come. He and I both know that those lived experiences-and those powerful lessons-stay with you forever. You know nothing is guaranteed to you. It is what makes one a fighter and Ed Markey has shown time and time again that he is exactly that. Many of those fights Ed took on when it was inconvenient for him to do so. There is also a humble passion and a quiet humility in him that I came to recognize and respect during my time in the Senate race,” said Pemberton.
Pemberton added: “From criminal justice reform to child care reform, to environmental justice and healthcare, his relentless advocacy on these issues is clear, longstanding and indisputable. Yet there is in him a willingness to learn and understand and to challenge and be challenged. I also believe that this Senate race has further awakened him to the many disparities in society, born of entitlement and calculated avoidance, that now require a new fight. I was particularly appreciative that Ed welcomed me into the Senate race because he understood why I was running and he also understood the significance of a former foster child from a gateway city entering into public service.”
“Steve has dedicated his life to elevating the voices of the marginalized so that their potential can be maximized. His Senate candidacy brought his unique lived experiences to the fight for justice. He focused on elevating the voices of those who are too often missing from public debate and policymaking,” said Senator Ed Markey. “I am honored that his powerful voice and thoughtful leadership are behind me in this race. I believe that together we can fight for a more just and equitable future, in every form, for the people of Massachusetts.”
Steve Pemberton is the best selling author of “A Chance in the World,” his memoir about his path against the odds to become a corporate executive, diversity leader, youth advocate, and acclaimed speaker. It is now a motion picture and the inspiration for the A Chance in the World Foundation, which Pemberton founded to help share some of the same advantages he received as a foster child. A New Bedford native, Pemberton ran for the U.S. Senate in Massachusetts until October 2019. He currently serves as Chief People Officer for Globoforce and a member of the Board of Trustees of Boston College, his alma mater.
Ed Markey has served in the United States Senate since winning the special election in 2013 and has amassed a deep record on environmental, racial justice, gun safety, and consumer protection issues. Raised in Malden, Ed Markey has always stood up for the priorities of Massachusetts.
