Senator Markey Stands with UNITE HERE Local 26 to Protest Poverty and Unaffordable Health Care
Tuesday, February 25, 2020
BOSTON — Senator Ed Markey has received the endorsement of UNITE HERE Local 26 in his re-election campaign for U.S. Senate. The endorsement came Friday, February 14th, when Senator Markey joined the Local 26 picket and rally at Boston’s Logan Airport demanding fair wages and affordable healthcare for LSG Sky Chef workers. Brian Lang, President of Local 26, delivered the endorsement, citing Senator Markey’s long history of supporting working people in Massachusetts and in Washington. Sky Chefs, subcontracted airline catering workers at Logan, provide food and beverages served aboard American Airlines flights. In 2018, only 38 percent of Logan Sky Chefs workers had employer-provided health care and almost 50 percent of workers make below $15 per hour, despite American Airlines reporting a net income of $1.7 billion in 2019.
UNITE HERE Local 26 is the hospitality workers’ union and represents more than 12,000 members working in the hotel, food service, and airport industries in Boston and Rhode Island. Senator Markey previously joined Local 26 in late 2019, walking the picket line during the 79-day Battery Wharf Hotel Workers strike. The union previously endorsed the Senator in his 2013 election.
Senator Markey has served in the United States Senate for the last six years and is widely regarded as the leading member of Congress on environmental issues. He has also led legislation to protect consumers and address the opioid epidemic, internet privacy concerns, and net neutrality.
