Peace Action Endorses Ed Markey for Senate
Wednesday, January 22, 2020
Washington, DC — Peace Action has announced its endorsement of Ed Markey for Massachusetts’s Senate seat. Peace Action is a national grassroots organization working to advance nuclear disarmament, promote government spending priorities that support human needs, encourage real security through international cooperation and human rights, and support nonmilitary solutions to international conflicts.
“Throughout my career I have championed education over annihilation, Medicaid over missiles,” said Senator Markey. “From advocating for cuts to our nation’s bloated nuclear weapons program, to promoting diplomacy to end conflict, I carry with me the values of Peace Action. I am grateful to have Peace Action standing beside me as we continue that commitment to peace by preventing Donald Trump from leading the United States into an illegal war. I am honored to receive their endorsement.”
Paul Kawika Martin, Senior Director for Policy and Political Affairs at Peace Action, who also directs Peace Action’s PAC, said of the Senator, “Peace Action is proud to endorse Senator Ed Markey in his 2020 re-election campaign. Not only has he voted with Peace Action 100%, but he has also consistently delivered leadership on our issues. His working-class background has made him appreciative of the need to cut the ballooning costs of endless wars. In particular, his championship on nuclear disarmament aims to keep all Americans safe from the existential threat posed by nuclear weapons while also aiming to reduce spending on these dangerous weapons. Markey’s time in the Senate has been spent promoting a foreign policy focused on diplomacy and justice, and we need to ensure his strong pro-peace voice continues to fill the halls of Congress.”
“Senator Markey is a bold progressive leader on nuclear disarmament and the Green New Deal,” says Cole Harrison, Executive Director of Massachusetts Peace Action. “Today, the climate emergency is a critical peace issue. Without international cooperation, the world won’t be able to come together to solve climate change. Senator Markey’s leadership in the fight for a Green New Deal shows that he understands the importance of this issue.”
