Environmental and Indigenous Rights Organization, Future Generations, Endorses Ed Markey for U.S. Senate
Tuesday, June 23, 2020
BOSTON — Future Generations, a national organization whose primary goal is to support environmental champions and Indigenous candidates in every level of office, today announced its endorsement of Ed Markey for re-election to the United States Senate.
“I am elated to have received the endorsement of Future Generations,” said Senator Ed Markey. “The group and its members understand the importance of a Green New Deal and electing candidates who will work to address the climate crisis with the urgency it requires, so that tribes, and the rest of the planet can truly thrive for years to come. It is my honor to fight for Indigenous peoples in the Senate and I will continue to protect and champion the causes they care for during the next six years.”
The organization endorses candidates who will prioritize bold climate action, promote human health, fight for ecosystem recovery, and support upholding Tribal Treaty Rights and Indigenous peoples. The group also trains, recruits, and supports grassroots candidates.
Executive Director of Future Generations Roza Calderon stated, “Senator Markey’s record, commitment, and leadership on climate action exemplifies our values. Authoring the Green New Deal with climate activists to address the most critical issue of our lifetime has made him a target for special interest groups looking to silence the environmental movement. We are proud to endorse Senator Markey and are ready to stand by this climate champion in the Senate.”
“Senator Ed Markey understands that the issues of economic justice and environmental justice are inseparable, and showed tremendous courage when he supported the Green New Deal and Medicare for All. If we are to leave a livable planet where future generations will thrive and prosper in, we have to re-elect Senator Markey so he can continue the fight,” said Future Generations Board Advisor Sydney Chun.
Patsy Doherty, Indigenous People Vote Director, Enrolled Member of Makah Tribe, added, “We need leaders who will stand against the agenda of conservative political leaders and show up for all people and future generations at this pivotal time of history. I am proud to endorse Senator Markey in partnership with Future Generations, who will stand by leaders who have always fought against bigotry, and will continue to be a voice for justice alongside Indigenous communities.”
The endorsement follows the recent announcements of support for Ed Markey from several major groups, including the national, progressive grassroots organization, Indivisble, the Sunrise Movement, American Federation of Teachers Massachusetts, Our Revolution Massachusetts, Planned Parenthood Action Fund, NARAL Pro-Choice, Progressive Democrats of America, the NRDC Action Fund, the Jamacia Plain Progressives, American Postal Workers Local #4553, and UNITE Here Local 26 labor union workers.
Senator Markey has served in the United States Senate since winning the special election in 2013 and has amassed a deep record on environmental, climate, gun safety, and consumer protection issues. He co-authored the Green New Deal, and his leadership has led to legislation to address the humanitarian crisis on the southern border, protect LGBTQ+ rights, and ensure that Donald Trump cannot launch a nuclear first strike without Congressional approval. Raised in Malden, Ed Markey has always stood up for the priorities of Massachusetts.
Future Generations is a volunteer-founded, youth-led organization dedicated to strategically engaging in political campaigns. The group supports, recruits, trains, and endorses candidates who will secure a livable planet for generations to come. The organization includes a passionate team of activists from all over the nation working together to elect environmental champions to every level of office, with its primary focus of flipping the Senate in 2020.
