In the first day of the caucus process, which will take place over the next five weeks, voters turned out big for Ed Markey, reflecting his strong support all across the state.
SOME FINAL RETURNS AVAILABLE AS OF 4 PM:
BOSTON WARD 20—MARKEY WINS
FITCHBURG WARDS 2, 5, 6—MARKEY WINS
LOWELL WARDS 1, 2, 6, 7, 9, 10—-MARKEY WINS
In addition to outright caucus wins, the Markey campaign earned significant delegate support in Ward 8 in Worcester, splitting the delegate allocation with his opponent.
“We are seeing the kind of big statewide support from the grassroots that reflects the leadership Senator Markey has shown for Massachusetts on a range of issues from climate change, to gun safety, to health care, to immigrant rights,” said John Walsh, the campaign’s manager and former chairman of the Massachusetts Democratic Party.
Markey earlier today stopped by both the Malden and West Roxbury caucus sites and spoke about his efforts on protecting our climate, fighting for common sense gun safety, pushing for the goal to cure Alzheimer’s by 2025, and delivering needed funding for a range of key infrastructure projects in cities and towns across the state. Markey has been endorsed by 20 mayors from across the Commonwealth who plan to stand with the Senator as he seeks re-election this September.
And yesterday, in a significant labor union development, UNITE HERE Local 26 Hotel Workers announced its endorsement of Ed Markey for re-election to the United States Senate.
“We are proud to endorse Senator Ed Markey in his re-election campaign as one of our two Senators from Massachusetts,” said UNITE HERE Local 26 President Brian Lang. “He has been a champion of working people in the streets and in our nation’s capital. Senator Markey stands with us in our campaign for a green, livable planet where one job is enough to take care of our families. We stand with him as our Senator!”
UNITE HERE Local 26 is the hospitality workers’ union and represents more than 12,000 members working in the hotel, food service, and airport industries in Boston and Rhode Island.
Recently, Senator Markey has secured the endorsements of several major progressive groups, including the Planned Parenthood Action Fund, NARAL Pro-Choice, the NRDC Action Fund, and Peace Action.
