Since he was elected, Ed has worked to end the proliferation of nuclear weapons. He championed the movement to freeze nuclear warhead buildup, and while in the House of Representatives, he co-founded the Congressional Bipartisan Task Force on Nonproliferation.

Donald Trump has set our country on a dangerous path and put our nation’s security at risk. No American president should have the power to launch a first nuclear strike. In January 2019, Senator Markey and Congressman Ted Lieu reintroduced the Restricting First Use of Nuclear Weapons Act of 2019, which would prevent the president from launching a nuclear first strike without congressional approval.

Following rising tensions with Russia under the Trump administration, Senator Markey and colleagues introduced the Prevention of Arms Race Act of 2019, legislation that would pull the United States and Russia back from the brink of a 21st Century nuclear arms race.

In light of media reports that the senior administration officials were considering restarting nuclear testing, Ed introduced the Preserving Leadership Against Nuclear Explosives Testing (PLANET) Act of 2020. The legislation would deny the Trump administration the funds to break the generation-old moratorium on nuclear testing.
