Sierra Club Touts Markey’s Decades-Long Climate and Conservation Efforts
Wednesday, September 18, 2019
Boston — Today, the Sierra Club announced it is endorsing Massachusetts Senator Ed Markey in his bid for reelection.
“Senator Markey is a career environmental champion, and has the Sierra Club’s full support,” said Sierra Club Massachusetts Chapter Director Deb Pasternak. “Senator Markey’s leadership on the climate crisis, particularly his co-authorship of the Green New Deal, makes him the most important environmental leader in the US Senate, and we’re determined to do our part to keep him there.”
First elected to Congress in 1976, Markey ascended to the Senate in 2013 where he continued his efforts to protect the environment and take climate action. Markey has fought tirelessly to protect the Arctic Refuge from being drilled, end offshore drilling, to block the Keystone XL pipeline, and countless other efforts. In the past year, Markey co-wrote the American Clean Energy Security Act and co-wrote the Green New Deal joint resolution with Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
“The climate and our air and water are cleaner today because of Senator Markey’s efforts,” said Sierra Club Executive Director Michael Brune. “In his decades of public service, Markey has always been the leader demanding action, making him perhaps the climate champion in Washington. The Sierra Club is proud to stand with Senator Markey once again, just as he has stood with environmentalists and conservationists his entire career.”
“I am honored to have the endorsement of the Sierra Club, my longtime partner and ally in the effort to protect our environment and combat climate change,” said Senator Edward J. Markey. “With the Trump administration rolling back fuel economy emissions standards, undermining the Clean Air and Water Acts, and launching daily attacks on our environment, we need a Green New Deal now more than ever. I thank Sierra Club for its support for my re-election and pledge to continue leading the fight for a climate solutions and a clean energy future.”
The Sierra Club will mobilize its members and supporters to re-elect Senator Ed Markey.
