BOSTON – Former Massachusetts Governor and Democratic presidential nominee Mike Dukakis and his wife, advocate and author Kitty Dukakis, today endorsed Ed Markey for re-election to the U.S. Senate.
In a new video released today, the Governor says, in part:
“This Green New Deal movement is not only so important to the future of the planet, but it has encouraged thousands and thousands and thousands of young people to get into this,” said Mike Dukakis. “And he is largely responsible for that. I’m very proud of him for that. But he is also somebody who cares very deeply about this state and what it is and who its people are. It’s down at the grassroots where change takes place and so we hope that folks that share our feelings about this election and about Ed in particular, will get deeply and actively involved. We’re here to tell you it does make a difference.”
“I have enormous respect for him and his ability,” said Kitty Dukakis. “And we have every reason to want to vote for him.”

Mike Dukakis was a three-term governor of Massachusetts and the 1988 Democratic nominee for President of the United States. Kitty Dukakis is an author and the former First Lady of Massachusetts. They reside in Brookline.
“Michael and Kitty Dukakis are the embodiment of the bold, progressive values that have made the Democratic Party what it is today. Beginning with their leadership in Massachusetts, they became the true founders of the grassroots movement, pushing for the change that our country needs. Their commitment to ensuring a fairer and more representative democracy is an inspiration. I could not be more grateful to them for their endorsement of my candidacy for re-election to the United States Senate,” said Senator Markey.
This endorsement comes only days after seven members of the Cambridge legislative delegation and three major progressive groups, including Planned Parenthood Action Fund, Peace Action, and NRDC Action Fund all endorsed Markey.
Senator Markey has served in the United States Senate since 2013 and is widely regarded as a Congressional leader on climate, energy, and environmental issues. He has authored laws that address the opioid epidemic, internet privacy concerns, disability access, among many.
