AFSCME Council 93 Endorses Ed Markey for Senate
Saturday, September 7, 2019
Medford – The Ed Markey for Senate campaign is proud to announce the endorsement of AFSCME Council 93, which represents more than 35,0000 state, county, municipal and school district workers in Massachusetts. The AFSCME endorsement of Ed Markey’s re-election to the United States Senate, the first major union endorsement of the 2020 race, comes after the recent endorsements of 350.org Massachusetts, the Sunrise movement, NARAL Pro-Choice America, and the League of Conservation Voters Action Fund.
Senator Markey was endorsed this morning by a unanimous vote of the AFSCME Council 93 Executive Board.
“Our union is proud to continue our longstanding support for Senator Ed Markey,” said Council 93 Executive Director Mark Bernard. “Throughout his more than three decades of work in the house and senate, Ed has been a consistent and strong supporter of our issues. There’s a reason that unions and management consistently agree that the value of work experience should be recognized in every contract we sign. It’s because both sides believe in ensuring that the most experienced people with the greatest amount of institutional knowledge are placed in the most important jobs. We view Ed’s his long tenure in Washington as one of his strongest assets. With so much at stake in the U.S. Senate, now more than ever, we need seasoned leaders like Ed Markey fighting for us.”
“I am honored to receive the endorsement of AFSCME and its members, whose efforts on behalf of working families are so important to Massachusetts,” said Markey. “From our public universities and colleges, to our state parks, to correctional facilities, to our school campuses, Council 93 makes up the backbone of state and municipal government, working quietly behind the scenes as truly the unsung heroes of government services. I am humbled by the strong and vocal support my campaign is receiving, and I will continue to reach out to all of unions, organizations, and residents throughout the Commonwealth who believe in standing up for working families and fighting for progressive values.”
