Nation's Leading LGBTQ and Reproductive Rights Orgs Endorse Ed Markey for Senate
April 2nd, 2026
| BOSTON, Mass. – Today, the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) and the Planned Parenthood Action Fund announced their endorsements of Senator Ed Markey for re-election to the Senate. The dual national endorsements recognize Senator Markey’s lifelong commitment to defending LGBTQ rights, reproductive freedom, and civil rights – and his leadership in the fight against an unprecedented MAGA Republican assault on all three fronts.
The endorsements come as Donald Trump and MAGA Republicans have escalated their attacks on LGBTQ Americans and reproductive freedom – defunding Planned Parenthood through cuts to Medicaid in the so-called “Big Beautiful Bill,” freezing Title X funding for clinics that provide reproductive care, pardoning anti-abortion extremists, and rolling back protections for LGBTQ+ people in health care, education, and the workplace. “Ed Markey is a proven champion for equality who has never wavered in the fight to ensure everyone is treated with dignity and respect,” said Kelley Robinson, President of the Human Rights Campaign. “From serving as a cosponsor of the Equality Act to leading strong opposition to the addition of anti-trans provisions in appropriations and defense authorization bills, Senator Markey has consistently shown up for LGBTQ+ people in Massachusetts and the country. At a time when equality and freedom are under assault, we need leaders with the courage and conviction to lead – and stand unshakeable in their values. Senator Markey fights every day to ensure everyone has what they need to thrive, and that’s exactly why the Senate needs his continued leadership.” “Donald Trump and congressional Republicans have “defunded” Planned Parenthood – knowing full well what it means for the millions of people who depend on Planned Parenthood health centers for birth control, cancer screenings, STI testing and treatment, and more,” said Alexis McGill Johnson, President and CEO of the Planned Parenthood Action Fund. “Senator Ed Markey has always been a fighter for reproductive freedom and access to the essential care that people need every single day. While Republicans in Congress transfer dollars intended for sexual and reproductive health care for working people into the pockets of billionaires, Senator Markey has refused to let them do it quietly. Planned Parenthood Action Fund can count on him to fight for Planned Parenthood health center patients and never back down from defending the right to make our own decisions about our lives, our bodies, and our futures. Planned Parenthood Action Fund is proud to endorse Senator Markey for re-election to the Senate.” Senator Markey has been one of the strongest voices in the Senate standing against these attacks and welcomed the HRC and Planned Parenthood Action Fund’s endorsements. “I am honored to receive the endorsements of the Human Rights Campaign and the Planned Parenthood Action Fund – two organizations that are on the front lines of the fight for equality and reproductive freedom in America,” said Senator Ed Markey. “Donald Trump and MAGA Republicans have made it their mission to roll back LGBTQ+ rights, defund Planned Parenthood, and rip away reproductive freedom from every person in this country. The Human Rights Campaign has been at the forefront of the fight for LGBTQ+ equality for decades, and Planned Parenthood is a lifeline for millions of people who depend on its health centers for essential care. I am proud to fight alongside both organizations to protect the right to marry who you love, the right to an abortion, the right to contraception, and the right of every person to live with dignity. I will always stand with HRC and Planned Parenthood.” Senator Markey's Record on LGBTQ+ Rights in the 119th Congress: Transgender Bill of Rights: In February 2026, Senator Markey and Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal reintroduced the Transgender Bill of Rights, a landmark resolution that reaffirms the federal government's duty to protect and codify the rights of transgender and nonbinary people under the law and ensure their access to medical care, shelter, safety, and economic security. Transgender Health Care Access Act: In November 2025, during Transgender Awareness Week, Senator Markey introduced the Transgender Health Care Access Act with Congresswoman Becca Balint to protect access to competent, compassionate, and affirming health care for transgender Americans – including expanding provider training in gender-affirming care and increasing capacity at community health centers. Fighting Trump's Assault on Transgender Health Care: In February 2026, Senators Markey and Wyden led a group of Senate Democrats calling on the Trump administration to withdraw two proposed regulations that would condition hospital participation in Medicare and Medicaid on not providing gender-affirming care for minors and ban the use of federal Medicaid and CHIP funds for such care. GLOBE Act: In June 2025, Senator Markey and Rep. Dina Titus introduced the Greater Leadership Overseas for the Benefit of Equality (GLOBE) Act to establish the United States as a global leader in LGBTQ+ rights protection – including creating a permanent Special Envoy for LGBTQ+ human rights at the State Department, authorizing sanctions against individuals who commit anti-LGBTQ+ human rights violations abroad, and establishing LGBTQ+ identities as a protected social group for asylum claims. Senator Markey’s Reproductive Rights Legislation in the 119th Congress: Women’s Health Protection Act of 2025: In June 2025, on the third anniversary of the Supreme Court’s decision overturning Roe v. Wade, Senator Markey joined the entire Senate Democratic caucus in introducing legislation to guarantee access to abortion nationwide and restore the right to comprehensive reproductive health care for millions of Americans. Right to Contraception Act: In February 2025, Senator Markey, as ranking member of the HELP Committee’s Subcommittee on Primary Health & Retirement Security, reintroduced the Right to Contraception Act with Senators Hirono and Duckworth to create a statutory right to obtain and use contraceptives and ensure health care providers can continue to provide contraception. Spotlight Hearing on Republican Attacks on Birth Control Access: In July 2025, as Republicans gutted Medicaid funding for Planned Parenthood, Senator Markey and Rep. Lizzie Fletcher hosted a hearing, “A Right at Risk: Protecting the Right to Contraception and Reproductive Freedom in the Post-Roe Era” to expose how Republican attacks on birth control access threaten reproductive freedom nationwide. ###
