Springfield Republican: Sen. Ed Markey: Arming school teachers ‘one of the stupidest ideas I have ever heard’

U.S. Sen. Ed Markey, D-Massachusetts, said the idea of preventing school shootings by arming teachers “is one of the stupidest ideas I have ever heard.”
“I just can’t imagine grammar school teachers coming around the corner with an AK-47 in their hand heading towards some gunman that is coming into the school,” Markey said. “I think it could create a very dangerous working place.”
After a school shooting in Parkland, Florida killed 17 people, President Donald Trump floated the idea of arming some teachers.
Markey has frequently criticized Trump. He is also a strong proponent of stronger gun control measures.
Asked after an unrelated event in Boston how he would address school shootings, Markey said he would make sure everyone who purchases a gun goes through a background check. Now, there are some loopholes in the law that allow some private sales to be done without a background check.
Markey also wants to reinstate a national ban on assault weapons. And he said the country has to make sure there is full funding for mental health services.
“We have to make sure mental health services are there, but we also have to make sure dangerous guns, automatic guns, guns that belong on the battlefields of the world but not on the streets of America, are not in the hands of anyone in our country,” Markey said.
