Campaign Launching Women for Markey Effort With Martha Coakley, Statewide Women Leaders

Charlestown, Massachusetts – The Ed Markey for Senate campaign today released a new ad, “77 Cents,” which highlights Rep. Ed Markey’s efforts to fight for equal pay for equal work, force insurance companies to cover preventive health services for women and protect a woman’s right to choose.

Ed Markey co-sponsored the landmark Lily Ledbetter Fair Pay Act and Paycheck Fairness Act. He is the Democratic pro-choice candidate in this race, and only candidate running who voted for the Affordable Care Act, which requires insurance companies to cover preventive services such as mammograms and birth control.

Markey has been endorsed for Senate by Planned Parenthood and NARAL.

Today, the Markey campaign is launching Women for Markey with 15 satellite events, hundreds of supporters across the state and an event at campaign headquarters with Attorney General Martha Coakley.

“Ed Markey knows it’s wrong that a woman makes just 77 cents for every dollar a man makes, and that’s why he co-sponsored historic legislation to end wage discrimination against women,” said Markey campaign spokeswoman Giselle Barry. “As the Democratic pro-choice candidate in this race, Ed Markey will fight in the Senate to protect a woman’s right to choose, block attempts to restrict access to preventive health services and ensure women receive equal pay for equal work.”
