Charlestown, Massachusetts – The National Organization for Women (NOW) PAC and Feminist Majority endorsed Ed Markey for Senate today, lauding his record of fighting for women’s issues and protecting the right to choose.

“NOW PAC endorses only those candidates who demonstrate an uncompromising commitment to the entire range of women’s rights issues, including reproductive justice, marriage equality and economic justice,”said Terry O’Neill, Chair of the National Organization for Women’s Political Action Committee. “Ed Markey has never let the women’s community down, and we are proud to announce our endorsement of him for U.S. Senate.  Ed Markey will continue to work to ensure that women have access to the opportunities to succeed, and we look forward to working with him when he is sworn in as our U.S. Senator.”

Mass. NOW PAC Chair Christina M. Knowles said, “The Mass. NOW PAC was thrilled to recommend Congressman Markey for endorsement by our national PAC. Markey is the only feminist candidate in the U.S. Senate race–and the clear choice for anyone who values advancing the status of women and girls.

“Markey has an outstanding record of championing reproductive health, health care equality, LGBTQ rights, pay equity, and countless other issues critical to achieving full equality for women and other marginalized populations. We need Ed Markey in the U.S. Senate.”

Feminist Majority President Eleanor Smeal also praised Markey’s leadership on issues such as protecting women’s reproductive rights and ending violence against women.

“The Feminist Majority proudly endorses Congressman Ed Markey for United States Senate. For years, Ed Markey has stood with the women’s movement in the fight for women’s economic, reproductive, and health care rights, as well as the fight to end violence against women,” said Feminist Majority President Eleanor Smeal. “Unlike his opponent, Ed Markey has a 100% voting record on women’s issues. Women can count on him. We simply need him in the Senate in these days when too many are waging a war against women.”

“I am proud to have the support of the National Organization for Women and Feminist Majority, organizations that have spent decades fighting to protect women’s rights, and make this country fairer and more just,” said Rep. Ed Markey. “In the Senate I will lead the fight to ensure women receive equal pay for equal work, and as the Democratic pro-choice candidate in this election, I am committed to protecting the right to choose and stopping the Republicans from restricting access to preventive health services for women.”

Ed Markey is 100 percent pro-choice. He co-sponsored the landmark Lily Ledbetter Fair Pay Act and Paycheck Fairness Act to end wage discrimination, and is the only candidate running who voted for the Affordable Care Act, which requires insurance companies to cover preventive services such as mammograms and birth control.

The Ed Markey for Senate campaign yesterday began airing a new ad, “77 Cents,” highlighting Markey’s pro-choice record and efforts to fight for equal pay.

Markey has also been endorsed for Senate by Planned Parenthood and NARAL.
