FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: March 9, 2013
Medford, MA – Today, Rep. Ed Markey (D-Malden) took to the streets and launched his campaign’s canvassing effort in Brookline and Milton with dozens activists and elected officials. Ed knocked on doors and asked for support to bring his fight for Massachusetts families to the U.S. Senate. Attorney General Martha Coakley joined supporters in Somerville, while Medford Mayor Mike McGlynn spoke with activists in his hometown. Ed joined State Senator Brian Joyce in Milton and spoke about going to the Senate to pass climate change and gun control legislation, and to ensure the rights of women and the LGBT community. By the end of the weekend, more than 700 Markey for Senate canvassers will hold more than 100 events and knock on thousands of doors throughout the Commonwealth.
“We’re knocking on doors and hitting the streets in a grassroots outreach effort that will stretch to all corners of Massachusetts,” said Markey. “Our cutting edge canvass operation is fueled by the excitement and energy of volunteers who believe in the progressive values we want to bring to the U.S. Senate.”
Earlier in the day, Ed appeared before a packed room of SEIU union members and shared his record of fighting for workers and their families. At the 2013 U.S. Senate SEIU Forum in Boston, Ed shared his commitment to comprehensive immigration reform and ensuring a path to citizenship for immigrants, as well as his support for President Obama’s health care plan.
“Health care is a right, not a privilege,” said Markey. “I was proud to support President Obama and vote for the historic health care law that is lowering costs and providing affordable coverage for millions of Americans.”
Tomorrow, Ed will be joined by supporters and local leaders at the annual Worcester St. Patrick’s Day Parade.
