Charlestown, Massachusetts – Today, the Ed Markey for Senate campaign launched “Women for Markey,” a statewide grassroots effort supporting Markey’s election to the Senate because of his tireless efforts fighting for women and protecting the right to choose.

Attorney General Martha Coakley joined dozens of activists at campaign headquarters in Charlestown to launch the outreach program and praised Markey’s leadership on issues such as choice and equal pay.

“Ed Markey is as a proven leader on women’s rights and reproductive health, and a relentless supporter of a woman’s right to choose and equal pay for equal work,” said Attorney General Martha Coakley. “I know Ed Markey will continue to be one of our strongest advocates for women’s issues as a United States Senator.”

Ed Markey spoke by phone, addressing dozens at campaign headquarters and hundreds more at house parties in Worcester, Framingham, Pittsfield, Wellesley, Lawrence, Lowell, Boxford, Cape Cod (Eastham), Brookline, Amherst, Newton, Needham, Westwood, Medway and Athol.

“The right to choose is a fundamental right that must never be infringed upon,” said Rep. Ed Markey. “I am proud to be pro-choice, and as the Democratic pro-choice candidate in this election, I am committed to protecting the right to choose, stopping the Republicans from restricting access to preventative health services and ensuring every woman receives equal pay for equal work.”

Markey is 100 percent pro-choice. He co-sponsored the landmark Lily Ledbetter Fair Pay Act and Paycheck Fairness Act to end wage discrimination, and is the only candidate running who voted for the Affordable Care Act, which requires insurance companies to cover preventive services such as mammograms and birth control.

Markey has been endorsed for Senate by Planned Parenthood and NARAL.
