Two of Many Endorsements from Western Massachusetts This Week
Saturday, May 30, 2020
WILLIAMSTOWN— Williamstown former Democratic Town Committee Chair Lee Harrison and former State Representative Sherwood Guernsey announced today their endorsements of Ed Markey for re-election to the United States Senate.
Harrison’s and Guernsey’s support comes as several other officials in the region also announced their support, including: North Adams City Council President Jason Laforest and City Councilor Lisa Hall Blackmer; and Pittsfield Community Activist Shirley Edgerton.
“As a United States Senator, I have always fought for the progressive values of all the residents of Massachusetts—and that fight requires partnering with grassroots organizers and local officials,” said Senator Markey. “Sherwood Guernsey and Lee Harrison represent the type of advocacy that a town needs, and I am honored to have their support in this race.”
“With the world fighting the coronavirus, it’s easy to forget that Trump, Mitch McConnell, and all Republicans continue to threaten American values, our 244-year-old democracy, and even life on this planet. That’s why it is so critical that we re-elect Senator Ed Markey, who has fought for working families, women’s rights, gun safety – and the environment – for decades,” said Lee Harrison. “Yes, experience matters. So, let’s send Ed back to the Senate to restore our democracy, to jumpstart our devastated economy, and to create an America that works for everyone.”
“This year, we should all be working to defeat our toxic president. Ed Markey fights every day to help the working men and women of our state,” said former State Representative Sherwood Guernsey. “He’s bold and smart; he leads the fight against climate change and is a key protector of Social Security and Medicare. I support our great senator, Ed Markey.”
Since March 2017, Senator Markey has worked with Massachusetts congressional colleagues to restore Massachusetts television programming to the Berkshires. In March 2020, he helped broker an agreement between 22News WWLP and Charter Communications to restore programming to their cable customers in Berkshire County.
Senator Markey has served in the United States Senate since winning the special election in 2013 and has amassed a deep record on environmental, climate, gun safety, and consumer protection issues. He co-authored the Green New Deal, and his leadership has led to legislation to address the humanitarian crisis on the southern border, protect LGBTQ+ rights, and ensure that Donald Trump cannot launch a nuclear first strike without Congressional approval. Raised in Malden, Ed Markey has always stood up for the priorities of Massachusetts.
Lee Harrison is a 20-year member of the Democratic State Committee, former Chair of the Berkshire Democratic Brigades, and former Chair of the Williamstown Democratic Town Committee.
Sherwood Guernsey served four terms as a member of the House of Representatives for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. He was also the Director of Domestic Programs for the Peace Corps in Washington, D.C.
