BOSTON — After he received the overwhelming support of 90 percent of its member votes, Our Revolution Massachusetts (ORMA) today announced its endorsement of Ed Markey for re-election to the United States Senate. Both candidates for U.S. Senate participated in the group’s endorsement process.
“Our Revolution Massachusetts members are staunch defenders of the environment and proponents of a Green New Deal, Medicare For All, and affordable housing, all of which lie at the heart of this election, and I am honored to receive their endorsement,” said Ed Markey. “The effectiveness of movements depends on the kind of people-driven advocacy that ORMA practices and that I have the privilege of championing everyday. I believe that by working together we can achieve the real, structural change that we need.”
ORMA issued the following statement:
“Our Revolution Massachusetts is proud to endorse U.S. Senator Ed Markey and to join together with everyday people across the state to support his re-election.
“He has demonstrated he will push the Senate to live up to the promise of racial justice, economic justice, and a livable planet for all.
“Senator Markey won our members’ trust overwhelmingly, receiving over 90 percent of the endorsement vote, because at every step of our process the stark differences between the candidates’ policies and priorities were clear.
“We invited both candidates to write a letter directly to our members and take part in a Q&A session.
“In their letters, Senator Markey was the only candidate to put forward a labor agenda, citing his advocacy in the fight for $15, the fight to expand public sector unions, and the fight to safeguard union elections. He was also the only candidate to put forward an immigrant agenda, citing his work to defend refugees with the Grace Act and to protect DACA and TPS recipients.
“In the Q&A sessions, members cited Senator Markey’s support for Rep. Pressley’s baby bonds bill to close the racial wealth gap and his work with Senators Sanders and Warren and Reps. McGovern and Pressley to suspend Iran sanctions that exacerbate the COVID-19 crisis.
“In 2021, we will work to help our nation and our planet recover from COVID-19, from Trump, and from decades of policies that have favored the 1% at the expense of the rest of us, Ed will play a leading role in pursuing equity for working families and the most vulnerable and exploited among us.”
The organization’s endorsement follows the recent announcements of support for Ed Markey from several major, groups, including the American Postal Workers Local #4553, and progressive groups Planned Parenthood Action Fund, NARAL Pro-Choice, the NRDC Action Fund, the Jamacia Plain Progressives, and UNITE Here Local 26 labor union workers.
A member-driven, grassroots coalition, ORMA is a chapter of Our Revolution – National that seeks to make the United States’ political and economic systems truly democratic and responsive to the needs of all Americans, not just the wealthy and powerful. ORMA promotes informed and active citizen participation in local, regional, and national political processes and works to improve public understanding of major policy issues, with particular focus on five priorities: Climate Change and a Green New Deal, Medicare for All, Ending Citizens United, Affordable Housing, and Voting Reform.
Senator Markey has served in the United States Senate since winning the special election in 2013 and has amassed a deep record on environmental, climate, gun safety, and consumer protection issues. He co-authored the Green New Deal, and his leadership has led to legislation to address the humanitarian crisis on the southern border, protect LGBTQ+ rights, and ensure that Donald Trump cannot launch a nuclear first strike without Congressional approval. Raised in Malden, Ed Markey has always stood up for the priorities of Massachusetts.
