MassLive: Sen. Ed Markey on CIA torture report: ‘Techniques described in this report were barbaric, illegal and ineffective’

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Senate Intelligence Committee’s full report on post-September 11 interrogation techniques by the CIA painted a grim picture of brutality used in an attempt to get answers from people thought to be associates of al-Qaida.

The report, released on Thursday, revealed treatment of prisoners in secret prisons in Europe and Asia a decade ago was worse than the CIA reported as the agency repeatedly said that its “interrogation techniques” saved American lives. The release of how the agency handled itself under GOP President George W. Bush set off a firestorm of reactions.
