The Republican – U.S. Rep. Ed Markey pushes privacy rules for domestic drones
Can a drone hovering overhead spy into your home in Western Massachusetts?
The idea may sound far-fetched, but as the use of domestic drones has expanded, the idea is generating concern among privacy advocates — including Democratic U.S. Rep. Edward Markey. Markey, who co-chairs a bipartisan Congressional Privacy Caucus, on Tuesday waded into the national conversation about drones by introducing a bill that would create new rules to protect individuals’ privacy from domestic drones.
“As drones increasingly fill our skies, Americans must be afforded a level of privacy and protection from these aerial technologies,” Markey said in a statement. “I look forward to working with my Congressional colleagues on this bi-partisan issue to ensure that strong personal privacy protections and public transparency measures are put in place now, before this technology is literally hovering over our heads.”
