Massachusetts Postal Workers Executive Board endorses Ed Markey for Senate
March 17th, 2026
BOSTON, Mass. – The American Postal Workers Union Massachusetts Executive Board and the Boston Metro APWU Local 100 announced its endorsement of Senator Ed Markey for re-election.
The APWU is an AFL-CIO affiliate that represents over 200,000 USPS employees and retirees, as well as nearly 2,000 private-sector mail workers. Its Massachusetts chapter includes workers in the Clerk, Maintenance, Motor Vehicle Service, or Support Services divisions across the state.
“Senator Ed Markey doesn’t just talk about standing with working people, he shows up and fights for them every day,” said Scott Hoffman, APWU National Business Agent for New England. “While others in Washington treat the Postal Service like a political football, Ed has always been in the trenches with us – battling privatization schemes, demanding fair wages, and making sure postal workers have the protections and resources we need to do our jobs safely. Ed has never wavered and he has always been the champion that postal workers need in the Senate. The APWU Massachusetts Executive Board is proud to endorse Senator Markey for re-election.”
In Congress, Senator Markey has been one of the strongest champions of the United States Postal Service and its workers. Senator Markey fought to pass the Postal Service Reform Act of 2022, which eliminated the crushing pre-funding mandate that threatened to bankrupt the USPS. Senator Markey has consistently opposed efforts to privatize postal services or reduce delivery standards, including last year when Donald Trump looked to gut the USPS.
“The United States Postal Service is a sacred promise that this country made to its people – a promise enshrined in the Constitution by our Founding Fathers who understood that a democracy cannot function without a postal system that serves every household in every community. Unionized postal workers are the ones who keep that promise alive every day – neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night,” said Senator Ed Markey. “The APWU of Massachusetts delivers the Social Security checks our seniors depend on, the mail-in ballots that make our democracy work, the lifesaving prescriptions to families who cannot get to a pharmacy. They show up every single day because that’s what public servants do. I am honored to earn the APWU’s endorsement and I will keep showing up for them the way they show up for all of us.”
The APWU of Massachusetts’ Executive Board and Boston Metro APWU Local 100’s support of Ed Markey builds on the endorsement of other labor unions including: the Massachusetts Teachers Association, the SEIU Massachusetts Statewide Council, the American Federation of Teachers Massachusetts, the Massachusetts Nurses Association, the Professional Fire Fighters of Massachusetts, and UNITE HERE Local 26.
Background:
- In February 2025, Senator Markey was among the first voices in the Senate to condemn Donald Trump’s plans to dismantle the USPS, calling the proposals “blatantly unconstitutional” and vowing to fight any effort to sell off the USPS or undermine its essential services.
- In November 2024, Senator Markey stood with postal workers and local officials in Boston to demand accountability from USPS management and led the Massachusetts congressional delegation in pressing then-Postmaster General Louis DeJoy and the USPS Inspector General to address persistent delivery delays, facility closures, and inadequate staffing across the Commonwealth.
- In 2024, Senator Markey fought to stop postal office closures across Massachusetts – in Medway, Watertown and Allston – including the proposed consolidation of the Brockton Processing and Delivery Center, which would have resulted in job losses and further degraded service. Senator Markey successfully reversed the closure of the Mission Hill Post Office.
- In 2022, Senator Markey fought to pass the bipartisan Post Service Reform Act, signed into law by President Biden, which eliminated the crushing pre-funding mandate that threatened to bankrupt the USPS. Senator Markey has consistently opposed efforts to privatize postal services or reduce delivery standards.
- In 2022, Senator Markey championed the electrification of the USPS delivery fleet, celebrating the postal service’s commitment to invest $9.6 billion – including $3 billion from the Inflation Reduction Act – to purchase 66,000 electric vehicles and build one of the largest clean energy fleets across the country.
