WORCESTER, Mass. – Hoy, Senador Ed Markey won the backing of the Massachusetts Democratic Party at the 2026 State Convention, demonstrating the strength of a campaign powered by grassroots Democrats, labor unions, local leaders, progressive organizations, and working people across the Commonwealth.
On Saturday, more than 4,000 delegates from across the Commonwealth gathered in Worcester to debate the Party’s agenda and delivered a decisive show of support for Senator Markey, who received 73% of the vote and won 39 of Massachusetts’ 40 State Senatorial Districts. Today's convention vote was a clear sign that Massachusetts Democrats are ready to send back a proven progressive fighter with the record, backbone, and results to take on Donald Trump, protect fundamental freedoms, and deliver for working families.
Speaking to delegates, Markey laid out the stakes of the midterm elections and the kind of Democratic Party he is fighting to build – one that will stand up to Trump, stand with working people, defend LGBTQ+ rights, take on political corruption, and use power to deliver real results.
“Because a simple Democratic majority in Congress is not enough,” Markey said on the convention floor. “We need a progressive Democratic majority, a majority that embraces boldness and isn’t scared to create lasting power. That is REAL generational change. And that is the choice YOU have in this race.”
Markey made clear that the race is a choice about values, results, and the future of progressive leadership.
“It is about a vision for our future and what you should expect from your Senator. Massachusetts deserves better than a Senator who scapegoats trans kids to score political points,” said Markey. “Massachusetts deserves better than a Senator who cashes in— who trades stocks in companies with businesses before the very Congressional committees he serves on. Massachusetts deserves better than a Senator who says universal health care is too much to ask for and that taxing billionaires is ‘class warfare’ against the rich.”
“I don’t trade stocks. I don’t take corporate PAC donations. I don’t take money from fossil fuel companies. I don’t treat public office as a personal self-enrichment plan,” added Markey.
Before the convention, Senator Markey was joined at a delegate breakfast by Massachusetts Attorney General Andrea Joy Campbell, U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren, Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley, Congressman Jim McGovern, Alex Rikleen, and a host state and local elected officials who rallied delegates around Markey’s track record of standing up to Trump, delivering for Massachusetts, and leading the progressive fights that define the future of the Democratic Party.
Markey also took direct aim at an economy rigged for the billionaire class while working families pay the price, and called for a tax code that values work over wealth and makes billionaire CEOs pay their fair share.
“It’s time we stop giving tax breaks to those who trade stocks over those who punch clocks,” said Markey. “I have a plan to make millionaires and billionaires pay taxes on their investment income the same way working people pay taxes on income from their labor.”
From voting against more of Trump’s nominees and agenda than any other Senator, to helping pass the largest climate investment in American history, to securing hundreds of millions in federal funding for communities across Massachusetts, Senator Markey has built a record rooted in results, consistency, and courage.
